LCI & Department of Chemistry , Kent State University
Research Assistant 1999-Present

At Liquid Crystal Institute and the Department of Chemistry, I work under the direction of Dr. John L. West, director of LCI and ALCOM, and Dr. Julia E. Fulghum, professor of chemistry. I am currently in the final year of my Ph.D. research. Some of the projects I have been working on are listed below:

  • Ion beam alignment of liquid crystals. Ion beam alignment of liquid crystal is the latest non-contact alignment technique (invented by IBM) that has attracted a lot of attention. We are currently studying the mechanism of this alignment technique and working on its applications to plastic substrates.
  • Study of liquid crystals for applications of beam steering in the infrared region. Design and characterization of liquid crystals that have high birefringence and low absorption in the infrared region.
  • · Photo-alignment of liquid crystals using adsorbed dichroic dyes. As a non-contact method, photo-alignment is one of the most promising substitutes for conventional rubbing techniques. We are working on the optimization of this technique.

LCI, Kent State University, Spring 2002
I instructed two graduate students in the spring of 2002 for part of their doctoral research. Both of their research projects involve the characterization of alignment films using analytical techniques.

LCI, Kent State University, Summer 2001
I instructed two undergraduate students for their summer research under the Research Experiences for Undergraduates program (REU) by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Their research project involves characterization of photo-alignment using dichroic dyes.

LCI, Kent State University, 2000, 2001
I was involved in teaching the annual short course: Liquid Crystals: Materials and Devices. A hands-on lecture/laboratory course that provides a working understanding of liquid crystal materials and display applications.

Department of Chemistry, Kent State University
Teaching Assistant 1998-1999
I was teaching the course "Organic Chemistry Lab" at the Department of Chemistry, Kent State University. The course is focused on the fundamental technologies of organic chemistry for undergraduate students.

Department of Materials and Nuclear Engineering, University of Maryland Research Assistant 1997-1998
My research project was Machining of Advanced Ceramic Materials for Dental Restoration. Supported by NIH.

Department of Polymer Science and Technology, Nanjing University Research Assistant 1995-1997
My research project is focused on the synthesis and applications of conductive polymers.

Department of Polymer Science and Technology, Nanjing University Research Assistant 1993-1995
As an undergraduate student, my honor thesis was focused on the synthesis and characterization of bio-compatible polymers for applications such as artificial organs and vessels.
