TEM: Policies
Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) Facility Policies:
How to start to use the TEM?
Just contact Dr. Min Gao to make schedule to use the TEM. You can also schedule a discussion with him about your samples and about how to start.
Interim hourly rates and acknowledgement policy (effective from 05/23/2011)
| Self operation and data interpretation (requires prior training and passing an exam)*,** | Staff operation of TEM *** | Staff operation of TEM and participation in data interpretation**** | |
| KSU users | $55 ($65 for cryo) | $115 ($130 for cryo) | $150 ($170 for cryo) |
| Outside academic users | $70 ($80) | $130 ($145) | $165 ($185) |
| Industry users | $160 ($180) | $260 ($280) | $290 ($310) |
| Frequent users (>150 hrs/y) | 10% reduction of all rates | 10% reduction of all rates | 10% reduction of all rates |
*The listed rates for academic users are discounted rates.
**All publications and presentations containing data obtained at the facility should contain the following acknowledgement:"The TEM data were obtained at the (cryo) TEM facility at the Liquid Crystal Institute, Kent State University, supported by the Ohio Research Scholars Program Research Cluster on Surfaces in Advanced Materials. The authors thank Dr. Min Gao for technical support with the TEM experiments".
***All publications and presentations containing data obtained at the facility should contain the following acknowledgement: "The TEM data were obtained by Dr. Min Gao at the (cryo) TEM facility at the Liquid Crystal Institute, Kent State University, supported by the Ohio Research Scholars Program Research Cluster on Surfaces in Advanced Materials".
***** All publications and presentations containing data obtained at the facility should list Dr. Min Gao as a co-author of the work. The publication should contain the following acknowledgement: "The TEM data were obtained at the (cryo) TEM facility at the Liquid Crystal Institute, Kent State University, supported by the Ohio Research Scholars Program Research Cluster on Surfaces in Advanced Materials".
Dr. Min Gao (or other staff member of the facility) should be a co-author only when they made important contributions to the design/conducting of the experiment or processing/analysis of the data. Routine TEM experiment does not qualify for a co-authorship nor for the special rates.
Rates other than hourly rates presented above (based on per sample and per project) might be applied in special cases, as negotiated by the staff and approved by administration.
User training
We encourage self-use of the TEM after proper training. We currently provide 1-on-1 or small group training for users with different levels of TEM experience.
We currently give the following small group (normally 3 students/group) trainings:
- Basic training on TEM use: We will cover the basic principles, hardware, software, imaging and spectrometry techniques, and detailed operation procedures with hands-on practice.
- Cryo-TEM training: We will cover the procedures handling Vitrobot, cryo-stage, transfer-station, cryo-specimen storage, anti-contaminator, and TEM low-dose mode. "Basic training on TEM use" is required before the cryo-TEM training.
Please contact Dr. Min Gao for training schedule and rates.
