CPIP and Chemistry graduate students awarded scholarships

By Jim Maxwell

Several CPIP Graduate Students were recently awarded scholarships for 2006-2007.

Chris Bailey and Oleg Pishnyak were awarded a one-year Samsung Scholarship increasing their stipends to $20,000 per year. This is the second year this annual scholarship was awarded to two CPIP graduate students (conducting research in liquid crystals) who will be supported by the stipend.

Samsung is asking these students to develop new LCD technologies to be used in support of Samsung's next generation display and manufacturing. Student proposals addressed being able to provide new materials, design concepts and display simulations.
Bailey will work with his advisor, CPIP Assistant Professor Antal Jakli on a project entitled, "High birefringence bent core liquid crystals for fast switching field- induced biaxial display."

Pishnyak will work with his advisor, CPIP Professor Oleg D. Lavrentovich on a project entitled, "3D imaging of dynamics of director and colloidal particles in liquid crystal cells by using a fast fluorescence confocal polarizing microscopy (Fast FCPM)."
Both students will write a technical report at the end of each semester for submission to Samsung.

CPIP students Fenghua Li and Lei Shi and Chemistry student Yulia Getmanenko were each awarded $666 ($2,000 split into three) from the Greater Dayton Chapter of the Society for Information Displays (SID). This is the first year that CPIP students have won this award. The SID chapter was looking for students pursuing research in display technology.

Li will work with his advisor, Dr. John West, Vice President of Research and Dean of Graduate Studies on a project entitled, “Ferroelectric polymer alignment layer for flexible liquid crystal display.”

Shi will work with his advisor, Professor Deng-ke Yang on a project entitled, “Bistable Switchable Liquid Crystal Window.”

Getmanenko will work with advisor, Professor Robert Twieg on a project entitled, “2,6-Diaryl-4,4-dialkyl-cyclopenta-dithiophene liquid crystals as charge transport/light emitting materials for OLED displays.”
