Kent State to celebrate 40th Anniversary of Liquid Crystal Institute
at Liquid Crystal Day on April 22

WHAT: Kent State University will celebrate 40 years of excellence at the Liquid Crystal Institute and host the second-annual “Liquid Crystal Day,” a symposium that brings together students, scientists and industrial professionals from different academic backgrounds and provides a platform for intellectual and enlightening interactions. Liquid Crystal Day will highlight the achievements in science and engineering of liquid crystal research at Kent State. The theme for Liquid Crystal Day is “Enhancing and Fostering National and International Leadership through Networking among Liquid Crystal Scientists and Engineers.”

Invited speakers include:
Tom Lubensky, University of Pennsylvania, "Theory of Liquid Crystalline Elastomers"
Jonathan Selinger, U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, "Quenched Disorder in Soft Materials: Helical Polymers and Liquid-Crystalline Elastomers"

WHEN: Friday, April 22 from 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., opening session at 9 a.m., including an LCI 40th anniversary presentation and awards ceremony, followed by speakers Tom Lubensky and Jonathan Selinger. Student posters, industrial exhibits and tours of the Institute will take place between 1:30 p.m. – 3 p.m. on the second and third floors atrium of the Liquid Crystal Materials Building. Kent State Alumni David Chung and Greg Crawford will speak from 3:20-4:20 p.m. followed by a ten minute presentation about the future of the liquid crystal field by Oleg Lavrentovich, director of the Liquid Crystal Institute. An awards ceremony will follow. Liquid Crystal Day is dedicated to Dr. Glenn Brown (1915-1995), who founded and served as the director of Kent State’s Liquid Crystal Institute from 1965-1983. Brown’s widow, Jessie Brown, will be in attendance and will accept a Career Contribution Award in honor of her husband’s outstanding contributions to the Liquid Crystal Institute.

WHERE: Samsung Auditorium, located on the first floor of the Liquid Crystal and Materials Sciences Building on the Kent campus.
