Fire Alarms and Tornado Warnings

Fire Alarms
When the fire alarm sounds you must leave the building immediately. DO NOT assume it is a test. Go to the nearest stairwell and exit the building. You should not stand between the two wings but should walk away from the building. If there should be an explosion you could be severely injured if too close to the building.

You should not re-enter the building until the fire marshall has declared the building to be safe.

If we know ahead of time that the system will be tested we always notify everyone with LCI Notes and a sign in the mailroom.

Tornado Warnings
In the event of a "Tornado Warning" (a tornado has been sighted on a course likely to affect KSU), the office receives a telephone alert in addition to the siren. If you are instructed to take shelter, do so at once. The shelter area in the LCM is the hallway of the north wing and the basement area of the south wing. Do not stand near glass windows or doors.

Kent State University participates in the annual Tornado Safety Alert held on the second Wednesday in March. Test alerts occur for the city of Kent each month on the first Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. and the third Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. You can assume that sirens at these times are only tests. Sirens at any other time should be treated as a real emergency and you should act accordingly.
