Professor of Mathematical Sciences
Professor, Chemical Physics Interdisciplinary Program
Chuck Gartland received a B.S. in Engineering Science (1972) and, after two years of military service, an M.S. in Mathematics (1976) and a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics (1980), all from Purdue University. In 1987, he joined the faculty of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Kent State University, where he is a Professor of Mathematics and an associate member of the Institute for Computational Mathematics. In 1996, he was appointed Professor in the Chemical Physics Interdisciplinary Program at Kent.
Professor Gartland's background is in numerical analysis. His current interests are in the areas of computational applied mathematics, in general, and the numerical modeling (using continuum models) of liquid crystal systems, in particular. He is a member of the American Mathematical Society (AMS), the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), and the International Liquid Crystal Society (ILCS).
