Kelly received his Ph.D. (1979) in Physics from Clarkson University. He joined the Liquid Crystal Institute staff in 1988. He is an associate professor in the Chemical Physics graduate program within the LCI. He is the creator of the software package, "Twist Cell Optics." His research interests focus on modeling of display devices and physical properties of liquid crystals.
